What are collocations? Why should I study them? - Irene

Hi there! 

Did you enjoy your summer holidays? It's great to see you here.

What are collocations? ¿Qué son las colocaciones?

According to the dictionary "the habitual juxtaposition of a particular word with another word or words with a frequency greater than chance", so basically words that work well together. If you think about Spanish, for instance, the verb that you would likely use with error is cometer. That's a collocation! If you use another verb, say hacer, people will probably understand you, but it doesn't sound natural.

Según el diccionario "la yustaposición habitual de una palabra en concreto con otra u otras palabras de forma frecuente", así que básicamente palabras que funcionan bien juntas. Si piensas en el español, por ejemplo, es muy probable que el verbo que utilices con error es cometer. ¡Eso es una colocación! Si utilizas otro verbo, por ejemplo hacer, seguramente te entiendan, pero no suena natural.

Why should I study them? ¿Por qué debería estudiarlas?

It's all about sounding as natural as possible. To be fluent in English -and to avoid mistakes- you will need them. Using Spanish as an example again: if I say "quiero tres fotocopias en negro y blanco", I'll be understood but not natural nor correct. BTW, in English blanco y negro is black and white (negro y blanco).

Todo se trata de sonar tan natural como sea posible. Para tener soltura en inglés -y para evitar errores- los necesitarás. Utilizando el español como ejemplo de nuevo: si digo "quiero tres fotocopias en negro y blanco", me entenderán pero no será natural ni correcto. Por cierto, en inglés blanco y negro es black and white (negro y blanco).

If you plan to do any official exams (EOI, Cambridge, IELTS), you'd better study collocations. Most of the Use of English tests include them in the questions.

Si tienes en mente hacer algún examen oficial (EOI, Cambridge, IELTS), más vale que te estudies las colocaciones. La mayoría de pruebas de Use of English las incluyen entre las preguntas.

How can I learn them? ¿Cómo las puedo aprender?

Read, listen, and access to as many real materials as you can. Pay attention to the way words are used together and try to copy it. Here you are some resources to help you learn collocations.

Lee, escucha y accede a cuantos materiales reales puedas. Presta atención a la forma en que las palabras se utilizan juntas e intenta copiarlo. Aquí tienes algunos recursos para ayudarte a aprender colocaciones.

Glossary:

- According to (prep): de acuerdo con, según, como dice.

"According to Jeff, the film starts at 7.30" "Según Jeff, la película empieza a las 7.30"

- For instance (adv): por ejemplo (sinónimo de for example)

First, you need to choose your level.

Primero, necesitas elegir tu nivel.

Secondly, you have a self-assessment test where you are shown different words and need to drag them to unsure or to I know it.

En segundo lugar, tienes un test de autoevaluación donde te enseñan diferentes palabras y tienes que arrastrarlas hacia unsure o hacia I know it.

Time to learn! Once your level is assessed, you are going to learn some of the words marked as unsure in order of frequency of use and some new ones. You start by reading the definitions.

IMPORTANT: don't pay attention to the phonetic transcriptions, most of them are wrong.

¡Hora de aprender! Una vez tu nivel es evaluado, vas a aprender algunas de las palabras que marcaste como unsure en orden de frecuencia de uso y algunas nuevas. Empiezas leyendo las definiciones.

Then, you are presented some realia -real material from everyday life- which includes the word you are studying; such as famous quotes ("to be or not to be"), series scenes, songs, news, etc.

Luego, te presentan realia -material real de la vida cotidiana- que incluye la palabra que estás estudiando; citas famosas ("ser o no ser"), escenas de series, canciones, noticias, etc. 

To hold yourself accountable, you have to set your goals and the time you are going to spend studying daily.

Para hacerte más responsable, tienes que fijar tus metas y el tiempo que vas a dedicar al estudio diariamente.

Translations are optional.

Las traducciones son opcionales.

Finally, you'll be offered new words and some exercises to revise, and on the test me section you'll be able to practise them.

Dictations are an excellent tool to improve your English, both your spelling and understanding. Why should you practice them?

Los dictados son una herramienta excelente para mejorar vuestro inglés, tanto la ortografía como la comprensión. ¿Por qué deberíais practicarlos?

• Dictation makes you aware of your comprehension problems: phonological, grammatical, or both. Some typical mistakes include the omission of the final -s or the final -ed.
• El dictado te hace consciente de tus problemas de comprensión: fonológica, gramatical o ambos. Algunos errores típicos incluyen la omisión de la -s o la -ed final.
• Dictation can help develop all four language skills in an integrative way.
• El dictado puede ayudar a desarrollar las cuatro habilidades lingüísticas de manera integradora.
• In the case of the provided dictations, you can self-correct them. They are a great way to study English independently.

The website English Club has an entire section devoted to dictations. They are divided into three different levels: elementary, intermediate and advanced.

La página web English club tiene una sección entera dedicada a los dictados. Están divididos en tres niveles: elemental, intermedio y avanzado. 

Depending on the level, you'll have different categories to select from: numbers and letters, questions, short conversations, etc. 

Dependiendo del nivel, tendrás diferentes categorías entre las que elegir: números y letras, preguntas, conversaciones cortas, etc.

Once you choose your dictation, you should follow this steps:

Una vez que elijas tu dictado, deberías seguir los siguientes pasos:

1. Listen at normal speed. Do not write. This is important because it gives you a general idea of what you are about to write.
1. Escucha a velocidad normal. No escribas. Esto es importante porque te da una idea general de lo que estás a punto de escribir. 
2. Listen to it again at slow speed and write what you hear. You can repeat this step a couple of times.
2. Escúchalo otra vez a velocidad lenta y escribe lo que oigas. Puedes repetir este paso un par de vez.3. Listen again at normal speed. Check if you missed something.

3. Escucha otra vez a velocidad normal. Comprueba si te has dejado algo.4. Press show the answer and correct what you wrote.

They speak in General American, so it's a good opportunity to get used to different accents.

This week's video is about food and cooking. I've divided it into two parts because it was way too long.

El video de esta semana trata sobre comida y formas de cocinar. Lo he dividido en dos partes porque era muuuuuy largo.

I highly recommend that you listen to Eva's great podcast about coffee and tea, which is an 

excellent complement to the breakfast section. 

Os recomiendo encarecidamente que escuchéis el genial podcast de Eva sobre té y café, que complementa de forma excelente la sección de desayuno.

I intentionally spoke very slowly in the video, so that if you are on level 1 or 2, you can understand better. If you are level 3, go to settings on the video, press "Velocidad de reproducción", and set it on 1.25.

Hablé muy lento en el vídeo adrede, para que si estáis en nivel 1 o 2 podáis entenderlo mejor. Si estáis en el nivel 3, id a los ajustes del vídeo, pulsad "velocidad de reproducción" y ponedla en 1.25.

Good to see you (expr) - ¡Qué alegría verte/veros!

Divide into (v) - Dividir en, separar en, clasificar en.

Way too long (expr) - Demasiado largo. Utilizamos way too+adjective para enfatizar. Too long sería demasiado largo, way too long es aún más, es una forma de señalarlo.

Highly recommend (coll) - recomendar encarecidamente (lit. altamente)

Por ejemplo el mensaje que podéis leer en algunas web: "We highly recommend you admit cookies to make your visit of our site as easy and comfortable as possible." 

"Recomendamos encarecidamente que aceptes las cookies para hacer de tu visita todo lo fácil y cómoda posible"

Intentionally (adv) - a propósito, deliberadamente, adrede.

Ejemplo: "After all, when someone hurts us intentionally or unintentionally, it's easy to feel angry." "Después de todo, cuando alguien nos hiere, intencionadamente o no, es fácil sentirse enfadado."

So that (conj) - para, para que, y así.

"Drive carefully so that you will arrive safely" "Conduce con cuidado para llegar a salvo"

Press (v) - pulsar, apretar, presionar.

¿Quieres practicar tu listening y no sabes cómo? Hoy quiero enseñarte una página web y una app muy entretenidas.

First, you need to select the language you are learning (English in this case). Then you choose songs or vídeos to complete the words. You have a wide variety of genres to pick: pop, heavy metal, rock, jazz, soundtrack... You can even choose film scenes and parts of TV programmes!

Primero tienes que seleccionar el idioma que estás aprendiendo (inglés en este caso). Luego eliges canciones o vídeos para completar las palabras. Tenéis una amplia variedad de géneros para escoger: pop, heavy metal, rock, jazz, bandas sonoras... ¡Incluso podéis elegir escenas de películas y fragmentos de programas de televisión!

The songs are rated from green to red like in the traffic lights, being green the easiest and red the most difficult, and inside each song, you can choose the number of words to fill in. 

Las canciones están clasificadas de verde a rojo como en los semáforos, donde verde es el más fácil y rojo el más difícil y, dentro de cada canción, puedes elegir el número de palabras que rellenar.

Once you start a song or video, you need to fill in the gaps. The method is different on the web site and on the app: on the website version, you need to type; while on the mobile one you choose a word out of four. My recommendation is for you to use the app unless you are quick typers. 

Una vez que empiezas con una cancion o un vídeo, tienes que rellenar los huecos. El método es distinto en la web y en la app: en la versión web tienes que teclear, mientras que en la versión móvil tienes que elegir una palabra entre cuatro. Mi recomendación es que uséis la app a menos que seáis "tecleadores" rápidos.

Wide variery (coll): amplia variedad, amplia selección, gran surtido.

"Capital of the historic territory of Gipuzkoa, the city offers a wide variety of attractions."

Genre (n): género, tipo artístico.

"Elvis was the father of the rock and roll genre".

Rate (n, v): evaluar, calificar, clasificar. De aquí viene la palabra "rating" de las películas cuando nos referimos a la clasificación por edades, o los adjetivos "overrated" (sobrevalorado) y "underrated" (infravalorado).

"I rate this book five stars"

Traffic lights (n): semáforo.

"At the traffic lights, turn right" "Gira a la derecha en el semáforo".

Fill in (PhV): completar, rellenar.

"Please, fill in your name, address and email, so we can contact you".

Once (adv): una vez.

"You can pay for it once you get there" "Puede pagarlo una vez llegue allí".

Gap (n): hueco.

En el metro de Londres podéis escuchar "Mind the gap" literalmente "atento al hueco" o, como dirían en metro de Madrid "al salir, tenga cuidado para no introducir el pie entre coche y andén"

Type (n, v): n. tipo v. teclear, escribir en el teclado.

Solo tienes que crear una cuenta donde dice "register" (si tienes una cuenta de los libros de texto de Oxford, ve a "Sign in" directamente) y añade los libros.

Access your bookshelf and go to "Oxford Readers Collection". Choose your level from A1 to B1/B2 and there you go: a good variety of graded readings for you.

Accede a tus estanterías y ve a "Oxford Readers Collection". Elige tu nivel -desde A1 a B1/B2- y ahí lo tienes: una buena variedad de lecturas graduadas.

The books are interactive, and you can listen to them (which I highly recommend).

Due to (interj) - debido a, como consecuencia de. 

Ejemplo: "The flight was delayed due to bad weather." El vuelo se retrasó debido al mal tiempo

Lockdown (n) - cierre de emergencia, bloqueo. En la actualidad se está utilizando para hablar del confinamiento.

Until (prep) - hasta, hasta que.

Ejemplo: "She lived with her parents until she was twenty-five" "Vivió con sus padres hasta los 25"

Sign in (Ph V) - iniciar sesión. Es lo mismo que log in.

Add (v) - sumar, añadir.

La expresión "add fuel to the fire" (lit. añadir combustible al fuego) significa "echar leña al fuego" en el sentido de agravar una situación problemática.

Bookshelf (n) - estantería de libros, librería

There you go (expr) - ahí lo tienes, eso es (en otros contextos es "bien hecho")

Highly recommend (coll) - recomendar encarecidamente (lit. altamente)

Por ejemplo el mensaje que podéis leer en algunas web: "We highly recommend you admit cookies to make your visit of our site as easy and comfortable as possible." "Recomendamos encarecidamente que aceptes las cookies para hacer de tu visita todo lo fácil y cómoda posible"

Needless to say (expr) - evidentemente, no hace falta decir que, huelga decir.

Unluckily (adv) - desgraciadamente, desafortunadamente.

Feel free (interj) - no dudar en, sentirse libre de, no cortase (es una expresión informal).

Ejemplo: "Please, feel free to call if you need any help" "Por favor, no dudes en llamarme si necesitas ayuda".

Anyways (adv) - de todas formas, de todos modos. 

Resource (n) - recurso, medio.

Ejemplo: "She works in Human Resources (HR)" es "ella trabaja en Recursos Humanos"

Handy (adj) - útil, práctico.

Ejemplo: "Eva's 'handy hints' are very handy!" "Los 'trucos prácticos' de Eva son muy útiles". También tenemos la expresión informal come in handy, que significa ser útil, venir bien.

Lo primero es lo primero: necesito presentación.

How, you ask? Easy, with a challenge. Are you familiar with the word challenge?

¿Cómo, me preguntáis? Fácil, con un reto. ¿Os suena la palabra reto? 

It appears everywhere on YouTube and the internet in general, and it is both a verb and a noun. 

Aparece por todas partes en YouTube e internet en general y es tanto un verbo como un nombre.

As a verb, it means "retar", and as a noun it's "reto".

Como verbo significa retar y como nombre significa reto.

So, I challenge you. Every two weeks, I'll post some activities for you to try. 

Así que, os reto. Cada dos semanas, subiré algunas actividades para que probéis.

This week I'm giving you some answers, and I want you to make the questions.

Esta semana os doy algunas respuestas y quiero que vosotros me deis las preguntas.

For instance: if the answer is "Irene" the question that you need is "what's your name?"

Por ejemplo: si la respuesta es "Irene" la pregunta que necesitáis es "¿cómo te llamas?"

First things first (expr) - Lo primero es lo primero.

Introduction (n) - Presentación.

Are you familiar with...? (expr) - ¿Te suena...? (literalmente "¿estás familiarizado?")

Por ejemplo, en este caso "Are you familiar with the word challenge?" es "¿te suena la palabra challenge?" Recuerda que you significa tú y vosotros, así que tambien lo podría traducir como "¿os suena?"

Everywhere - Por doquier, por todos lados. 

Challenge (v., n.) - V: retar N: reto

Every two weeks (expr)- Cada dos semanas

Utilizamos every+tiempo para decir "cada X tiempo". Por ejemplo "I go to the hairdresser's every three months" es "voy a la peluquería cada tres meses"

For instance (expr)- Por ejemplo. Es lo mismo que for example.

Number (n, v) - N: número V: numerar
